In the morning we were met by a young NZ sea-lion on the beach at Ulva Island. Most of us enjoyed a guided walk around Ulva Island with Ulva and her knowledgeable team of guides. While strolling through the spectacular forest we experienced what New Zealand's birdlife was like many years ago. Among the birds seen and heard were: kaka, toutawai (robin), kereru (pigeon), tieke (saddleback) and brown creeper (pipipi). Two groups actually got to see the elusive kiwi - a fantastic opportunity.
Some of us explored Paterson Inlet in the Xplorer visiting the Ross Sea whaler's old maintenance site, spotting Stewart Island shags, searching for kiwi at Ocean Beach and visiting the Salmon farm at Big Glory.
In the afternoon many of us explored the 27km of roads with the local bus company, visiting a lookout and some beautiful beaches. We learned that 80% of Rakiura is national park, with the majority of the rest being protected lands. We then had the chance to explore the small community of Oban. Around the shores of Halfmoon Bay the village is delightfully nestled into the surrounding forest.
On departure from Stewart Island Malcolm gave an overview of Rakiura - Stewart Island.
