Day Eleven Monday 24th Gisborne

Following breakfast we boarded our coach bound for Pakowhai marae. En route we practised our rendition of All You Need Is Love - each practise we were getting better and better! Entering the marae we followed protocol with a karanga (greeting), whaikorero (speeches) and waiata (song). Hongi or sharing of breath followed with the local whanau (family).

David talked about the history of the Marae and the tribe. A sumptuous morning tea was devoured in style. Tio the carver then described his work while Manu and friends gave us a sample of their skills in waiata and haka (singing/action songs).

In the afternoon a group went wine tasting at Wrights Wines, some climbed to the top of Kaiti Hill, while others went to explore Gisbome and buy buzzy bees at the Warehouse. We left Gisborne on a warm summer's evening.
