Most of us survived the smooth cruise north and were cheered by the sight of the sun as we approached Whakaari/White Island. The white cliffs and steaming crater led to some spectacular views as we circumnavigated the island in the Oceanic Discoverer.
With a reducing level of volcanic unrest, we remarked on how much the volcano's interior had changed since last year. A slight sea meant a near perfect landing on the "jetty"! An interpretive walk complete with gas masks and helmets was enjoyed by all.
As we headed towards Auckland Mark gave a presentation on New Zealand volcanoes and weird creatures while Malcolm talked about his work at Sanctuary Mountain. Captain's drinks were enjoyed as we dined on our final dinner on board.
